Featured Femme: Shonte` Heim Joseph, Future Physician

Femme a` Femme: Welcome Shonte and thank you for agreeing to share your experience as a student of medicine! Please give our readers a brief introduction about your interests and hobbies?

Shonte` Heim Joseph: I am currently an L2 (second year) medical student at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, LA. I’m also a dual degree student. When I first applied to med school I was totally an overachiever (laughing). In addition to getting my MD I’m also getting a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in behavioral community health sciences. I’ll obtain both  degrees in 2020, when I walk across the stage on that glorious day! My interest right now, as far as medicine’s concerned is practicing in a field that will help my people. In the sense of the morbidities that affect us more, diseases like diabetes and hypertension.  I am interested in practicing as an endocrinologist or nephrologist. I want to practice in a field that will allow me to give back to my community.

Outside of med school if I had a really long day at school, I like to go to Marshall’s or T. J. Maxx and go through the aisles and buy things for the home like candles. I love interior design, if I was not in med school, I would be pursing interior design. I consider myself a mini Joanna Gaines. I feel like I would be flipping houses if I was not in med school.  The other thing I  like to do is peruse the aisles at grocery stores, to figure out what I’m going to eat. Other things I like to do are Pinterest and couponing. I love going to the grocery store and watching the price go down, with my coupons.  Of course I also like to hang out with family and friends, that’s cool. The interesting part is finding a balance between doing what you need to do to be successful in your degree program and doing what you need to do to have a  healthy mental outlook . It took me a while to figure it out. When I began med school I was not ready for the amount of information you have to learn and retain. I think I’ve found a balance. I’ve gotten to a point where I am pretty balanced and pretty happy, even though med school is kinda crazy. I think life is about finding your happy place in the midst of all the craziness! Cultivate Kindness

Kindness is the act of being friendly, thoughtful, and caring to name a few. We as women should not only show kindness to ourselves, but also each other.  So many of us face insecurities about characteristics that make us who we are.  You never know what someone is dealing with, or how your words or actions might affect them.  How much does it cost to be kind?  Absolutely nothing.   The next time you notice something that you genuinely admire in another person, try giving a compliment. It may be a small gesture on your part, but you never know the positive impact it can have on the recipient.

Hello!

Hello and welcome to femme a’ femme blog! My name is Erin Williams I am a wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, and registered nurse. Femme a’ femme is French, it translates to woman to woman in English. I created this blog to inspire girls and women to love and empower themselves and one another. I see so many girls and women struggling to love themselves and to be honest that saddens me. I don’t have all of the answers, but I do have love, compassion, and faith. Those are a few of the qualities that help me and I figured I’d share them with you. We are stronger together!
