Featured Femme: DeLisa Alexander, Owner of Braids by Lovely DeLisa

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m 32 years old,  married, with  4 kids ages 5 to 15. Outside of styling hair I love to read and play with my kids! Reading is almost like an addiction for me, I could be standing in a grocery store line and I pop open my Kindle and read! I like to read various types of literature including urban fiction and self-help books.  Lately I’ve been reading books by T.D. Jakes, which help me to better understand what is going on with my life. Chenell Parker  is an author from Louisiana who writes urban fiction, she is one of my favorites. Another good read is Think & Grow Rich,  it starts slow, but it has a purpose. Keep Reading

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m 33 years old, I’m a survivor of childhood cancer, heart disease, and domestic violence! I have 3 children and a step-son. My sons are 13 and 6 years old, my daughter is 11 years old. I’m a certified life coach as well as a track and field coach. I’m also in the process of planning our wedding! Other than that, I’m your regular everyday person that likes to do a lot of weird stuff! That’s what makes me interesting, but I’m really not that interesting. Keep Reading

Featured Femme: Shonte` Heim Joseph, Future Physician

Femme a` Femme: Welcome Shonte and thank you for agreeing to share your experience as a student of medicine! Please give our readers a brief introduction about your interests and hobbies?

Shonte` Heim Joseph: I am currently an L2 (second year) medical student at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, LA. I’m also a dual degree student. When I first applied to med school I was totally an overachiever (laughing). In addition to getting my MD I’m also getting a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in behavioral community health sciences. I’ll obtain both  degrees in 2020, when I walk across the stage on that glorious day! My interest right now, as far as medicine’s concerned is practicing in a field that will help my people. In the sense of the morbidities that affect us more, diseases like diabetes and hypertension.  I am interested in practicing as an endocrinologist or nephrologist. I want to practice in a field that will allow me to give back to my community.

Outside of med school if I had a really long day at school, I like to go to Marshall’s or T. J. Maxx and go through the aisles and buy things for the home like candles. I love interior design, if I was not in med school, I would be pursing interior design. I consider myself a mini Joanna Gaines. I feel like I would be flipping houses if I was not in med school.  The other thing I  like to do is peruse the aisles at grocery stores, to figure out what I’m going to eat. Other things I like to do are Pinterest and couponing. I love going to the grocery store and watching the price go down, with my coupons.  Of course I also like to hang out with family and friends, that’s cool. The interesting part is finding a balance between doing what you need to do to be successful in your degree program and doing what you need to do to have a  healthy mental outlook . It took me a while to figure it out. When I began med school I was not ready for the amount of information you have to learn and retain. I think I’ve found a balance. I’ve gotten to a point where I am pretty balanced and pretty happy, even though med school is kinda crazy. I think life is about finding your happy place in the midst of all the craziness!
