3 Tips to Close the Gender Wage Gap

Obstacles exist for almost everything.  Unfortunately there are also obstacles for earning equal pay for equal work! Identifying the obstacles empower us to overcome them! The gender wage gap seems to be a never-ending issue.  The wage gap is caused by several issues including gender bias, racial bias and discrimination, and industry worked. When I became aware of this and the fact that it has been going on forever, I felt powerless, but I wondered how can we overcome this ginormous issue? Did you know on average a woman earns 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man? The wage gap is even worse for women of color! Upsetting right! Never the less, there are a few ways to overcome this issue.1. Research the national average on salaries for whichever job you are applying. Knowledge of this kind can help you more confidently negotiate a salary offer. 2. Go after promotions early on. Research shows that wages for women stagnate around age 30; since this is the age, most college educated women start having children. Going after promotions early on can minimize or prevent a wage gap issue later on.3. Track your accomplishments and share them with your leader, this increases your chances and percentage rate for promotions thus lessening the wage gap.

Femme Facts:

  • Wage gaps not only exist for men and women, they also exist for minority racial groups.
  • Although the wage gap exists nationwide, it is worse in some states than others.
  • According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW,) the wage gap won’t close until 2119!

5 Tips That Will Help You Make the Most of Your Time

Our time is precious; time and money are two things that most of us cannot afford to waste. We can maximize our time and money by improving efficiency. Improvements in certain areas can reduce stress, save money, and give you more time to spend doing the things you love.

People ask me all the time how do you work, go to school, and have time for your family? The answer is that I try to organize and pre-plan as much as possible. No I don’t have a fit if things don’t go exactly as planned! However, I try to have a general idea of what my week is going to look like. Keep Reading

Don’t let fear win!

Fear = paralysis and causes people to stay in bad situations due to familiarity. Compromising values, goals, and dreams because you are too afraid of what may go wrong, or what people will think are every day examples of how we let fear win. What others think of you has nothing to do with you, and guess what you can’t control the thoughts of others. But what you can control are your thoughts and actions. What is something you want to do that you have been putting off? If your dreams don’t scare you then they aren’t big enough!

What do you want? 5 steps to help you figure it out.

Simple question, but the answer can be quite complex. What goals, dreams, and desires do you have? What do you want out of life? Deciding what you want comes easy for some and not so easy for others. Sometimes deciding what you want is as easy as deciding what you don’t want. Nothing kills more dreams than indecisiveness and lack of a plan! Steps to take to accomplish your goals: 1. Write your goal down, somewhere that is highly visible for you. 2. Do a little research. No need to reinvent the wheel, use the experience of others to avoid pitfalls. 3. Write down your plan and share it with someone who will motivate you. 4. Set your plan into action. Don’t obsess over why you can’t do it! 5. Reassess your actions to make sure they align with your goal. Those simple steps can be applied in any situation.   The hardest part of getting what we want is getting started and staying committed.  I’m not saying it will be easy, but it will be worth it!

Cultivate Kindness

Kindness is the act of being friendly, thoughtful, and caring to name a few. We as women should not only show kindness to ourselves, but also each other.  So many of us face insecurities about characteristics that make us who we are.  You never know what someone is dealing with, or how your words or actions might affect them.  How much does it cost to be kind?  Absolutely nothing.   The next time you notice something that you genuinely admire in another person, try giving a compliment. It may be a small gesture on your part, but you never know the positive impact it can have on the recipient.
